Credit crunch or simply maturity

March 21st 2010

I used to grab everything I lay my eyes on and used up all the 50% staff discounts and 2 items of accessories.  That was history. Almost.

As a consequence, I ended up with a room full of clothes and ’stuff’. Getty older, fatter, unfortunately I have to deal with shrinkage, but not the one I wanted. I had to let go of many of my favourite clothing pieces, almost 90% of my jeans. I left my ’stuff’ when I left New Zealand. I still remember giving away the black velvet cutie girlie black Karen Walker dress for Gingko. And of course the shipment of clothes to Scotland and home. Again, same thing happen, I loved everything I saw so hence the pile get stacked up.

The credit crunch issue had been a topic during the recession in the fashion industry. As I recalled a joke of David Letterman ‘fashion budget of 100$ gone own to 20$’. Yeah what are you going to do about it? ‘Buy a lipstick’ Anna Wintour said. The global meltdown does hurt Vietnam’s fashion, generally several people and designers have complained that the sales aren’t as great as other years. Or simply I say…..both consumers and designers cant or dont know how to deal with the issue, hence lack of education on the media (apart from the true experts) side I blamed.

Back to me…..

I think it’s a combination of both the credit crunch and the fact that I’m physically changed and being older in the mind left me thinking….of each purchase. Impulse purchase is Great Fun. I mean shop till you drop is a great concept and how fun it is to go to the shops, point at what you like and just swipe it??? Admit it girls….you love it and wishing that your significant other or your high fly career can facilitate that habit of yours. I’ve done it.

Well..I like a colourful wardrobe, where I have every colour, styles for every occasion. Not enough. The guilty pleasure lies in the fact that I dont want to turn up to parties wearing the same outfit my friends spotted me on the other evening. Or looking at myself in the mirror before going out….and thinking I cant wear this…I wore it to ‘ Dose’.

Saying goodbye to my clothes are tough and I still have many at home now that I hardly touch but still dont want to let go. I could always say to myself…well credit crunch let’s not spend and wear those I already owned. But I truly think this does not work..because I often feel sad about not being new. The vicious circle starts again. More buying.

When does it end?

Well, it ends where I feel comfortable in my own skin and over the years by experimenting with things, I know what I like, what’s good, what’s not and sometimes….what’s odd. So part of being mature is to Invest in pieces that are both fun but signified myself the BEST possible way, not just yeah this is me today and this is me tomorrow.

Which is why I dont get it when designers here dont pay attention to market this to their customers, getting them to buy expensive signature pieces that good for the sales at the same time helping fashion wearers to realise cutting corners during bad economics time in a no no in FASHION. Actually the mags also should take responsibility.

So here are one of pieces….that might not see the light of day again….

It’s not an overnight process to get rids of things ans start to pick out what’s best in your wardrobe. Throwing out ’stuff’ during spring clean is a good start. Do however keep however…a new fresh young attitude

Farewell party
